Thanks to Covid-19, my home desk has unwittingly become my working, gaming, and writing desk. Pre-pandemic, I always had a strong separation between my work, gaming, and writing spaces. I’d work in a company office, I’d game at home, and I usually wrote at a local, favorite Starbucks that has a great view and vibe.

Now, everything’s combined out of necessity, and I’ve had to re-train my brain to really focus while at home for work, and open itself up to write creatively. In the last few months, I’ve sorely missed my work desk, which had a standing option. When your work and hobbies all require you to sit at your desk…standing is key.

Thus, it was past time for a new desk (the ones at work were too long to fit in my space).

Here’s what my home desk set up looked like for the prior 5 years or so:

Because the geeky clutter accumulated over the course of nearly six years, I truly hadn’t noticed how bad it had gotten.

I decided on an Autonomous desk with an accompanying cabinet because I still needed that storage space.

By the way, my grandmother (who bought this condo and installed this original office) was super serious about getting the desk into that closet space with 0 millimetres of room on either side. It had to come out 100% straight or else it dug into the wall. Also, it was a very tired, 20+ year-old desk.

It was a struggle to get that sucker out of the office closet, but somehow we managed. Originally, my grandmother had it as an “L” shape, but given it was installed in the late 1990s, whomever designed the desk (1) didn’t understand how a corner desk should be orientated, and (2) didn’t understand how computers functioned because the “computer cabinet” had only a small hole for cables to poke through–no ventilation whatsoever. Thus, we took that extra let out when we moved in.

Quinn thankfully took the lead on doing all the heavy lifting and assembled my new desk (I helped by handing him pieces and keeping him company) and an initial monitor setup until I could get my work monitor.

Once completed, I had a basket full of Funko Pop! and other figures that needed a home, now that they no longer fit in my space. Thus, we now have new guest bathroom decor style that stares at you in an uncomfortable, disconcerting way while you conduct your *business*.

Please don’t mind the late ’90s wallpaper–this is not a room we’ve bothered to update much since moving in.

Random thought, but I’ve made my book characters into all sorts of other art styles, even Funko Pop!
